TBA Connect: Sharing insights, innovation and the future of terminal operations
TBA has launched TBA Connect, a new series of videos bringing together experts from across the business to share the latest developments in terminal operating systems, automation, cybersecurity and the wider challenges facing the ports and terminals industry.
Designed to keep customers and industry professionals informed, TBA Connect provides an opportunity to hear directly from the people behind TBA's technology, exploring recent innovations, future plans and practical ways to improve operational performance.
The series is introduced by TBA’s Managing Director Chris Hicks, who reflects on the company's progress since its 2024 User Group Conference, including continued investment in CommTrac, growth in industrial automation and the importance of developing strong customer partnerships.
Chris also highlights TBA's ongoing commitment to innovation, supported by parent company Konecranes, and the recognition received alongside Peel Ports Group at the 2025 International Bulk Journal Awards, where the two companies won the Innovative Technology Award.
CommTrac: New developments and future roadmap
In his video, Brad Hinchliffe, Chief Product Owner of CommTrac, provides a comprehensive update on the latest developments and future direction of TBA's terminal operating system (TOS).
A central focus is the continued evolution of CommTrac into a fully integrated multi-cargo TOS, capable of supporting different commodity types and transport modes within a single platform.
The session explores recent improvements including a modernised user interface, enhanced language support, redesigned gate functionality, improved shift management and new operational dashboards covering vessels, trucks, trains, barges and stockyard activities.
Looking ahead, Brad introduces further developments in reporting, configuration, customer access and integration, alongside emerging AI capabilities designed to make operational information easier to access and use.
Making the business case for terminal digitalisation
David Trueman, Commercial Director, explores two important considerations for terminals looking to improve efficiency through digitalisation: effective data capture and return on investment.
Drawing on TBA's experience working with terminals worldwide, David explains why collecting the right operational data at the right time is essential. Capturing too little information can limit visibility and result in missed revenue opportunities, while excessive data entry can slow operations and create resistance among frontline workers.
The session also examines how terminals can build a compelling business case for a TOS implementation, identifying opportunities to reduce administration, improve productivity, strengthen inventory control and capture billable activities more accurately.
Cybersecurity: Protecting critical terminal operations
With ports and terminals increasingly reliant on connected systems, cybersecurity remains a critical priority.
Luke Woodcock, Head of Software Development for CommTrac, outlines TBA's multi-layered approach to protecting customers against evolving cyber threats. The presentation covers secure software development, staff training, vulnerability monitoring, independent penetration testing and TBA's ISO 27001-certified information security management practices.
Luke also discusses the growing influence of artificial intelligence on cybersecurity, including how emerging technologies create new threats while providing opportunities to strengthen security.
More predictable software releases and improved customer support
Glynn Thomas, Head of Delivery Services, explains recent changes designed to provide CommTrac customers with greater visibility and predictability.
These include the introduction of Jira Service Management as TBA's customer support platform, offering improved ticket tracking and reporting.
Glynn also introduces a structured software release schedule, with two major CommTrac releases planned each year, in March and September, supported by minor updates where required. This approach is designed to give customers greater confidence when planning upgrades, training and operational changes, while allowing TBA's development and testing teams to maintain a consistent focus on software quality.
Automation: From concept to operation
Edward Yarbrough, Director of Automation, provides an insight into TBA's industrial automation capabilities and the team's approach to delivering bespoke turnkey projects.
Working across ports, bulk material handling, recycling, waste processing, pumping stations and tunnelling, TBA's automation engineers design and deliver solutions tailored to complex operational environments.
Edward takes viewers through the project lifecycle, from initial concept and electrical design to development, testing, commissioning and ongoing support. The session also examines how advances in engineering tools and AI are helping TBA deliver increasingly sophisticated automation solutions, while maintaining a strong focus on safety, reliability and operational performance.
Sustainability and the future of terminal operations
Sustainability is another important theme in TBA Connect 2026, with a dedicated video exploring the subject and its relevance to the industry.
As ports and terminals seek to improve efficiency and address environmental challenges, sustainability continues to be an important consideration in long-term operational planning.
Continuing the conversation with our customers
A common theme throughout TBA Connect is the importance of collaboration. From product development and service delivery to automation and cybersecurity, TBA's approach is shaped by an understanding of the operational challenges facing its customers.
The series builds on the conversations started at TBA's previous User Group Conferences, providing further insight into how customer feedback is influencing the company's development priorities.
Through TBA Connect, the company aims to share knowledge, encourage discussion and demonstrate how its investment in people, technology and innovation is helping ports and terminals operate more efficiently.
