Automation engineers from TBA have been supporting the delivery of a major new recycling facility in Aberdeen, bringing years of experience in large-scale materials handling and waste processing systems.

The project centres around a new material recovery facility (MRF) being developed by SUEZ following a significant fire in 2022 that rendered the previous plant inoperable. The site has undergone a £30 million rebuild and is expected to play a key role in restoring and improving recycling services across the region.

As part of the redevelopment, Sutco was appointed to install advanced sorting technology capable of processing mixed waste streams and recovering high-quality recyclable materials.

The new facility represents a step-change in recycling capability. The plant is designed to process around 20 tonnes of commingled waste per hour and separate it into multiple recyclable fractions, supporting higher recovery rates and improved efficiency.

“I’m delighted by the impact our automation engineers have made on this project,” said Automation Director, Edd Yarborough. “Their expertise in control systems and integration has helped ensure this project’s unique network of machinery operates reliably and efficiently. It’s a great demonstration of the growing demand for specialist automation skills in modern recycling infrastructure, where digital systems and intelligent controls are increasingly critical.”

The rebuilt MRF is also aligned with Aberdeen City Council’s wider environmental ambitions, including its circular economy strategy and targets to improve recycling rates.

Once fully operational, the facility will enable the recovery of valuable materials from household waste, reduce reliance on external processing sites, and provide a long-term boost to sustainable resource management in the region.
