Bristol Ports Company improves its operational agility with CommTrac v4
The Bristol Port Company, a privately-owned port spread over 2,600 acres, has been a key player in the UK's agribulk trade, managing up to 1.5 million tons of imported and exported feed and grains annually.
Overseeing the operation is James Reeson Agricultural Bulks Trade manager, where he has worked since 1993. The company's commitment to excellence is evident in its continuous efforts to innovate and improve operational efficiency, particularly in terms of IT systems and stock control.
In 2007, the Bristol Port Company realised the need to enhance its IT systems to manage its stock control more effectively, especially given its operations across two sites with five weighbridges. James Reeson recalls how he became aware of CommTrac, "We knew of CommTrac’s reputation in the sector and began speaking to TBA. The go-live was a very smooth and efficient changeover and added huge value to our business with its level of control."
By 2020, it became clear that an upgrade would soon be necessary. "After 13 years with version 3, we knew that there was going to become a point where it would be necessary to upgrade to v4 of CommTrac. The transition to newer technologies and the need for even greater precision and efficiency prompted the decision to upgrade to CommTrac version 4." The new version promised enhanced features, most notably its cloud-based nature, which would allow the team to access the software from virtually anywhere.
In 2023, the Bristol Port Company went live with CommTrac version 4. This move was driven not only by the need to keep up with technological advancements but also by the desire to continue the successful partnership with TBA and CommTrac. "CommTrac is a system that controls stock very precisely. It allows us to manage vast amounts of cargo, which is ideal for us given that we can hold over 150,000 plus tons on site at any one time."
The key benefits for Bristol Port of CommTrac v4 included:
- Cloud-Based Access: One of the most significant advantages of CommTrac version 4 is its web-based platform. This feature has revolutionized operations by providing the team with the ability to access the software from any location. "The flexibility offered by cloud access ensures that critical information is always within reach, enhancing decision-making and operational efficiency."
- Real-Time Stock Control: CommTrac continues to excel in providing precise stock control. With over 150,000 tons of cargo on-site at any given time, the ability to manage and monitor stock in real-time is invaluable. Reeson explains, "We can see, in real time, how much cargo is held in any particular location. It's very flexible in switching stock movements from one location to another, which is very important in the world of animal feed."
- Mobile Device Compatibility: A key improvement in version 4 is the ability to access key data from mobile devices from anywhere on the site. "Our loader drivers being able to view weighbridge screens from tablets within the warehouse reduces risk and improves our profitability in terms of load efficiency and accuracy."
The transition to CommTrac version 4 has had a profound impact on the Bristol Port Company's operations. The benefits of cloud access, real-time stock control, and the enhanced user interface have collectively contributed to a more streamlined, efficient, and profitable operation. Reeson notes, "CommTrac v4 has proven to be an excellent move forward. The system being on the cloud has allowed portal access regardless of location, allowing us to make real-time decisions, leading to faster response times and improved operational agility."
James Reeson and his team have expressed high levels of satisfaction with the new system. He reflects, "The seamless transition, coupled with the robust features of CommTrac version 4, has reaffirmed our decision to continue working with TBA and CommTrac. The commitment to innovative solutions and continuous improvement has positioned the Bristol Port Company at the forefront of the agribulk trade industry."
The Bristol Port Company's journey from CommTrac version 3 to version 4 is a testament to their dedication to excellence and innovation. By embracing new technologies and continuously seeking ways to enhance operational efficiency, they have set a benchmark in the agribulk trade industry. The successful implementation of CommTrac version 4, with its cloud-based access, real-time stock control, and enhanced driver interface, has not only met but exceeded their expectations.
As the agribulk trade industry continues to evolve, the Bristol Port Company's proactive approach to adopting cutting-edge solutions ensures that they remain a leader in the field. The partnership with TBA and CommTrac has proven to be invaluable, providing the tools and support needed to navigate the complexities of modern port operations.
